Early Life & Education

Prof. Anami hails from Ibukase village, situated in the Shiseso Sub-location of the Ikolomani constituency in Kakamega County. Raised in a rural environment, he attended Shamusinjiri Primary School and Cheptais High School. Due to financial hardships, he transferred to Namulungu High School and ultimately graduated from Mwihila High School with O-level qualifications in 1994.

In 1996, he enrolled at the University of Nairobi, where he obtained a BSc degree in Botany and Biochemistry. Subsequently, he received a VLIR scholarship to Belgium to pursue a MSc degree in Plant Biotechnology at Katholic University Leuven, followed by a PhD in Biotechnology at Ghent University, graduating with distinction. He later achieved a PhD+ at Ghent University.

Academic Career & Research

With funding from the Chinese Government, Prof. Anami conducted post-doctoral research at the Institute of Botany under the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing. He is a recipient of the Borlaug International Agricultural Science and Technology Fellowship, which endeavors to enhance food security and stimulate economic development.

Prof. Anami has taught at the Technical University of Mombasa, where he established the Laboratory of Plant Genetics and Systems Biology. He then moved to JKUAT, where he worked as a Senior Researcher in the Institute for Biotechnology Research and eventually progressed to the role of Professor of Biotechnology, while also serving as the Director of the Institute.

He is highly esteemed for his academic contributions and field research, recognized as a global authority in Agricultural Biotechnology.

Impact & Current Initiatives

Sweet Sorghum Initiative

Successfully implemented sweet sorghum hybrids in partnership with farmers in Kakamega, Nyando Kisumu, Uganda, Tanzania, Sudan, and China. Currently establishing a manufacturing plant in Kakamega, positively impacting over 500 farmers.

African Breadfruit Initiative

Leads the African Breadfruit Initiative, introducing breadfruit to Kenya for the first time and managing the largest breadfruit botanical garden in Kakamega County. Gluten-free breadfruit flour can completely replace wheat flour, and a single tree can sustain a family of five for a century.

Enset Introduction

Recently introduced Enset from Ethiopia to Kenya, where it supports food security for over 30 million people, with a vision to bolster food security in Kenya.
